Description

Although vast and complex, the universe is orderly in many ways, and conditions at its beginning were right for the eventual evolution of life on this planet. But with life there is death, and with sentient life there is great pain and suffering, often with no apparent justification or purpose. Taking these things together, is it reasonable to conclude that the universe was brought about by God? Moreover, does the magnitude of seemingly pointless suffering square with the idea that God exists, or is it good reason to think there is no God? These questions come up for many people, not just religious believers, and are examined in this engaging and thought-provoking book.

Starting out with no pre-disposition to theism, atheism, or agnosticism, God, Evil, and Design takes up these questions in order to see where an impartial investigation leads. To achieve impartiality, the reader is invited to simulate ignorance insofar as his or her own religious preference is concerned. With this approach, God, Evil, and Design provides both a fresh look at important and controversial issues in philosophy and an excellent introduction to the contemporary debates surrounding them. Lively and non-technical, this book will be accessible to anyone with an interest in these topics.

The Future of the Internet–And How to Stop It

This extraordinary book explains the engine that has catapulted the Internet from backwater to ubiquity—and reveals that it is sputtering precisely because of its runaway success. With the unwitting help of its users, the generative Internet is on a path to a lockdown, ending its cycle of innovation—and facilitating unsettling new kinds of control.

IPods, iPhones, Xboxes, and TiVos represent the first wave of Internet-centered products that can’t be easily modified by anyone except their vendors or selected partners. These “tethered appliances” have already been used in remarkable but little-known ways: car GPS systems have been reconfigured at the demand of law enforcement to eavesdrop on the occupants at all times, and digital video recorders have been ordered to self-destruct thanks to a lawsuit against the manufacturer thousands of miles away. New Web 2.0 platforms like Google mash-ups and Facebook are rightly touted—but their applications can be similarly monitored and eliminated from a central source. As tethered appliances and applications eclipse the PC, the very nature of the Internet—its “generativity,” or innovative character—is at risk.

The Internet’s current trajectory is one of lost opportunity. Its salvation, Zittrain argues, lies in the hands of its millions of users. Drawing on generative technologies like Wikipedia that have so far survived their own successes, this book shows how to develop new technologies and social structures that allow users to work creatively and collaboratively, participate in solutions, and become true “netizens.”

Description

  • Explores the hot question of why the early Christians did not practice animal sacrifice
  • A valuable contribution to the religious history of the eastern Mediterranean during the early Roman empire
A study of animal sacrifice within Greek paganism, Judaism, and Christianity during the period of their interaction between about 100 BC and AD 200. After a vivid account of the realities of sacrifice in the Greek East and in the Jerusalem Temple (up to AD 70), Maria-Zoe Petropoulou explores the attitudes of early Christians towards this practice. Contrary to other studies in this area, she demonstrates that the process by which Christianity finally separated its own cultic code from the strong tradition of animal sacrifice was a slow and difficult one. Petropoulou places special emphasis on the fact that Christians gave completely new meanings to the term `sacrifice’. She also explores the question why, if animal sacrifice was of prime importance in the eastern Mediterranean at this time, Christians should ultimately have rejected it.

Readership: Scholars and students of the early Christian Church, of ancient Greek religion, of the history of Judaism.

КРЪЩЕНИЯТА НА БЪЛГАРСКИТЕ ЦАРЕ

Константин Събчев. Донесли вода от Йордан за царя. - http://www.standartnews.com/bg/article.php?d=2008-04-22&article=230204

Description
  • A gripping account of the ruthless Christian crusade that pitted European against European and introduced genocide to Western history
In January of 1208, a papal legate was murdered on the banks of the Rhone in southern France. A furious Pope Innocent III accused heretics of the crime and called upon all Christians to exterminate heresy between the Garonne and Rhone rivers–a vast region now known as Languedoc–in a great crusade. This most holy war, the first in which Christians were promised salvation for killing other Christians, lasted twenty bloody years–it was a long savage battle for the soul of Christendom.
In A Most Holy War , historian Mark Pegg has produced a swift-moving, gripping narrative of this horrific crusade, drawing in part on thousands of testimonies collected by inquisitors in the years 1235 to 1245. These accounts of ordinary men and women, remembering what it was like to live through such brutal times, bring the story vividly to life. Pegg argues that generations of historians (and novelists) have misunderstood the crusade; they assumed it was a war against the Cathars, the most famous heretics of the Middle Ages. The Cathars, Pegg reveals, never existed. He further shows how a millennial fervor about “cleansing” the world of heresy, coupled with a fear that Christendom was being eaten away from within by heretics who looked no different than other Christians, made the battles, sieges, and massacres of the crusade almost apocalyptic in their cruel intensity. In responding to this fear with a holy genocidal war, Innocent III fundamentally changed how Western civilization dealt with individuals accused of corrupting society. This fundamental change, Pegg argues, led directly to the creation of the inquisition, the rise of an anti-Semitism dedicated to the violent elimination of Jews, and even the holy violence of the Reconquista in Spain and in the New World in the fifteenth century. All derive their divinely sanctioned slaughter from the Albigensian Crusade.
Haunting and immersive, A Most Holy War opens an important new perspective on a truly pivotal moment in world history, a first and distant foreshadowing of the genocide and holy violence in the modern world.

Description

  • The only comprehensive study of the biblical testimony about God’s ‘other peoples’
  • Will enable and illuminate interfaith dialogue, a pressing and immensely important project today
  • Draws on the best biblical scholarship available, while avoiding the tedious jargon that has come to dominate much Christian writing about world religions
This book examines in depth and at length what the Old Testament and the New Testament hold about the salvation of God’s ‘other peoples’. The Bible repeatedly witnesses to the universal scope of the divine love for all human beings and the chances of salvation that are available to them. Since the Israelites experienced for many centuries, both at home and abroad, the religion and culture of numerous other peoples, the Old Testament texts have much to say, both positively and negatively, about the religious prospects and destiny of these peoples. In its second half this book scrutinizes what Jesus, the evangelists, Paul and the Letter to the Hebrews indicate about God’s loving designs for all human beings. At the end, the book breaks new ground by developing the universal presence of the risen Jesus (along with the Holy Spirit) and his role as universal Wisdom, and the full teaching of the Letter to the Hebrews on the possibility of faith for all people.

Readership: Scholars and students of theology, biblical studies, and religious studies; general readers interested in Christianity, Judaism, and interfaith relations.

Former bishop Fernando Lugo [вляво] scores historic win in Paraguay

By BILL CORMIER

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080421/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/paraguay_election

.

ASUNCION, Paraguay - Former Roman Catholic bishop Fernando Lugo won a historic victory in Paraguay’s presidential election Sunday, ending more than six decades of one-party rule with a mandate to help the nation’s poor and indigenous.

His rival, Blanca Ovelar, conceded defeat after a closely fought race to lead this poor, agrarian nation where Ovelar’s Colorado Party is the only ruling party most people have ever known.

News of the win by the gray-bearded Lugo, dubbed the “bishop of the poor,” set off massive parties in cities across Paraguay with horn-honking caravans of cars blaring music. Others stamped on torn-down banners of the Colorado Party, which many Paraguayans blame for decades of corruption by political elites.

The triumph by Lugo’s eclectic opposition alliance also marked the latest in a series of electoral wins by leftist, or center-left, leaders in South America.

“You have decided what has to be done in Paraguay. You have decided to be a free Paraguay. Thank you, thank you, all of you!” Lugo, 56, told tens of thousands of supporters in downtown Asuncion, as fireworks burst under a full moon. “Today, we have written a new chapter in our nation’s political history.”

Journalism student Andrea Ramirez, 19, waved a red-white-and-blue Paraguayan flag at the rally. “I voted for the first time and am very happy. The shameless and cynical ones have lost.”

With about 13,000 of 14,000 balloting stations counted, officials said Lugo had 41 percent of the vote, Ovelar had 31 percent and former army chief Lino Oviedo had 22 percent. Minor candidates accounted for the remaining votes.

Ovelar, a former education minister and protege of outgoing President Nicanor Duarte, conceded that she had lost after initially disputing exit poll results. She would have been Paraguay’s first female president.

“The outcome is irreversible,” Ovelar, 50, said on national television five hours after polls closed following largely peaceful voting. Election officials said Sunday’s voting had the highest turnout — about 66 percent — of any presidential election since the end of the 35-year dictatorship of the late Gen. Alfredo Stroessner.

Lugo’s triumph broke the Colorado Party’s legendarily long grip on power, which began in 1947, before even the communist parties in Cuba or China came to power.

In Paraguay’s long-volatile politics, Lugo still awaited final official returns confirming his landmark triumph, which would make him he first former Catholic bishop elected as a president.

News broadcasts showed two minor scuffles outside polling places Sunday, but officials said voting was without serious incidents.

The Colorado Party had long stayed in power thanks to an extensive party apparatus and hundreds of thousands of loyal government civil servants.

But eight months ago, Lugo welded leftist unions, Indians and poor farmers into a coalition with Paraguay’s main opposition party: the conservative Authentic Radical Party.

Lugo, who often wears sandals and farmers’ hats, then launched a charismatic campaign in which he blamed Paraguay’s economic woes on decades of corruption by an elite that ruled at the expense of the poor in a country of subsistence farmers.

A bishop since 1994, he resigned the post in December 2006 to sidestep Paraguay’s constitutional ban on clergy seeking office. Lugo says he was influenced by the liberation theology frowned upon by the Vatican. But he says he is neither on the left nor the right, but leads a pluralistic coalition.

Recently, left or center-left governments have come to power in Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.

Economist Mark Weisbrot of the Washington-based Center for Economic and Policy Research said Lugo’s win shows how deep these changes sweeping South America really are.

“If a candidate of the left, clearly identified with the poor, can break the grip of the longest-ruling party in the world — and a right-wing party at that — it shows how much South America has changed and how democracy has taken root,” he said.

Lugo has distanced himself from the region’s more radical leaders, such as Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez.

“Chavez is a military man and I have a religious background,” Lugo told reporters in Washington last year. “My candidacy has arisen at the request of the people, it was born in a different way than Hugo Chavez’s.”

Fueling Lugo’s campaign was voter disenchantment with 13 percent joblessness in South America’s poorest country after Bolivia. Some 43 percent of the 6.5 million Paraguayans live in poverty.

Paraguayans were also voting to seat a 45-member Senate, an 80-member lower House of Deputies and 17 governors.
