Orthodox bishop shares Communion with Catholics

Timisoara , May. 27, 2008 (CWNews.com) - A Romanian Orthodox bishop has shared Communion with Catholics, causing a sensation in a country where Byzantine Catholics and Orthodox have a history of tense relations.

At the consecration of the Queen of Peace parish church in Timisoara on May 25, Orthodox Metropolitan Nicolae Corneanu of Banat asked to share Communion. The Orthodox metropolitan approached the altar and received the Eucharist from his own hand.

Romanian Catholic Bishop Alexandru Mesian of Lugoj was the celebrant of the Divine Liturgy in the Byzantine Catholic church; Archbishop Francisco-Javier Lozano, the apostolic nuncio to Romania, was also present.

Although Orthodox and Catholic bishops often join in ecumenical services, and occasionally participate in each other’s liturgical ceremonies, they do not share Communion– an indication of the breach in ecclesial communion between the Orthodox churches and the Holy See. In Romania, tensions between the Orthodox Church and the Eastern-rite Romanian Catholic Church have been pronounced, adding to the surprise created by Metropolitan Corneanu’s action.

With some Orthodox believers outraged by the metropolitan’s sharing Communion with Catholic bishops, the Orthodox Patriarchate of Romania issued a statement saying that at the next meeting of the Orthodox synod, in July, Metropolitan Corneanu “may be asked to give an appropriate explanation” for his action.

The statement from the Orthodox patriarchate went on to say that ecumenical relations with the Catholic Church, “already quite fragile, cannot be helped, but are rather complicated,” by sharing in Communion.

Metropolitan Corneanu– who was one of the first Orthodox bishops to admit that he had cooperated with the secret police under the Communist regime– has a record of friendship with Romanian Catholics. He was among the few Orthodox leaders prepared to return church properties that had been seized by the Communist government from Catholic ownership in 1948 and handed over to Orthodox control.

От януари във Великобритания започна постепенното изтегляне на продуктите с вредната съставка. Възможно е Е211 да бъде премахната и в останалите газирани напитки, посочва вестникът. От гръцкото представителство на “Кока-Кола” обаче уверили, че съставката е напълно законна.
Междувременно службата за контрол на храните на Гърция е наредила на митниците в цялата страна да блокират всички пратки със слънчогледово олио, които пристигат в страната, включително и от европейски страни, съобщи радио “Скай”. След скандала с отровното украинско олио, което се продаваше по гръцките магазини, гръцките власти имат обица на ухото. Те ще проверяват автентичността на пратки и от България, допълва “Елевтерос типос”. Властите се опасяват, че е възможно да се правят опити на преопаковане на украинско олио, което да бъде върнато на гръцкия пазар през “задния вход”. В случаите, когато олиото е от Украйна и е без сертификати, пратката ще бъде връщана, а ако няма удостоверение за химичен анализ, ще остава под карантина.

Substance abuse is an important issue in the city of Košice, Slovakia and when members of the Scientology Volunteer Ministers European Cavalcade asked officials in the city what help they needed, they answered immediately - drug education to help youth avoid the tragedy of addiction.
In this city, children as young as 5 years of age start abusing drugs by sniffing glue, so the Volunteer Ministers held drug education lectures in local schools and community centers. These lectures not only gave the children the facts about substance abuse, they also helped them learn how to cope with problems that lead young people to abuse drugs
in the first place. From a chapter of the Scientology Handbook, the youngsters learned about the emotional tone scale. They learned how to tell whom they can trust and who does not have their best interests at heart, and they know now that drugs will not make them happy, no matter how “high” they make them feel in the short run.

“The children are so beautiful,” said one of the volunteers, “and we have never received so many thank you letters. One of the local mayors thanked for us repeatedly for our work. It was a joy to help these children with the drug ed lectures.”

In their stay in Košice, the volunteers also provided courses, seminars and workshops on disaster relief and one-on-one help to thousands of people. Local hospital workers will also remember the Volunteer Ministers as the people who introduced them to Scientology assists* and helped them gain the skill to enable their patients to overcome the emotional and spiritual trauma that prolongs illness and blocks recovery.

The Volunteer Ministers have now been officially accepted as part of the civil protection force for the region. The Continental European Cavalcade, which is now moving on to Austria, trained a corps of new Volunteer Ministers who will fulfill that responsibility and be on call to help the community in times of emergency.

When he developed the Volunteer Ministers program in the 1970s, L. Ron Hubbard wrote, “If one does not like the crime, cruelty, injustice and violence of this society, he can do something about it. He can become a Volunteer Minister and help civilize it, bring it conscience and kindness and love and freedom from travail by instilling into it trust, decency, honesty and tolerance.”
